Geissweid Hirschen Old Town Zug

Study assignment

Client: Korporation Zug

Location: Zeughausgasse 9, 6300 Zug

Processing: 2017

The townscape of the upper old town of Zug is characterized by ist compact-appearing urban body, which precisely defines the open space and thus forms street and courtyard spaces by means of dense construction. Restoring the alley space on the Zeughausgasse is one of the main concerns of this design. This appears to be central in relation to Hirschenplatz and its high quality. The space of the Zeughausgasse is strengthened by the urban setting of the new volume in its continuous flight and the Hirschenplatz gets a clear spatial closure as a laterally attached square.

Attempts are also being made to create spatial clarity on the courtyard side. The existing residential courtyard in the north is given an "end" with an elongated low building and its gable façade, which supports its private and quiet atmosphere. The extension of the monastery green space to the west strengthens the restored original character of an alley room with the garden areas arranged at the rear.

The newly created garden courtyard is located opposite the old coffee roastery on the lower level of gastronomy use. This level jump is taken up with a low retaining wall, which is also able to achieve a clear structure of the individual rooms. A part of the garden courtyard is executed in chaussierte covering and covered with chestnuts. As a result, the courtyard space is zoned in a natural way. The newly created room with a view of the monastery wall promises a high quality of stay with an identity-creating effect.

The courtyard on the monastery wall is practically left in its present state. A newly inserted chaussierte surface thematizes the location of the fountain, forms an appropriate conclusion with a new courtyard tree.

As a connecting and central house, however, the characterful wooden construction (old coffee roastery) is released, this divides the outdoor spaces according to the place on a small scale and creates atmosphere.
