Hotel Des Balances is a stately row of houses in a prominent location on the banks of the river Reuss in Lucerne's old town. Between 1807 and 1901, three parts of the building developed into today's traditional and historic hotel complex. It is located in the heritage protection zone and is listed in the old town inventory as well as in the inventory of hotel and tourism buildings 1800-1960.

In 2019, the entire building technology of the renowned hotel was renewed and brought to the latest technical standards. All hotel rooms, reception and banquet halls are additionally air-conditioned. A combined heat pump-cooling system for
the necessary thermal energy replaces the existing heating boiler and domestic hot water systems. Heating and cooling as well as hot water are primarily produced using water from the river Reuss.

The interventions in the existing building structure are limited to the technical rooms in the basement and the corridor zones on the upper floors. In connection with the additionally required pipe installations for the cooling water on the ceilings, the existing corridors have been completely redesigned. The correspondingly developed colour, material and lighting concept adequately reflects the mood and colour of the hotel rooms and at the same time takes into account the historical architectural language of the building.
