As part of its renovation, the New Apostolic Church in Affoltern am Albis is being architecturally reimagined and carefully refined. The existing church building on Zeughausstrasse is characterized by its striking roof shape and a clear geometric layout. These qualities are being incorporated, refined and translated into a contemporary architectural language.

The new building envelope gives the structure a calm, precise appearance. Vertically profiled Eternit façade elements envelop the existing building and enhance its sculptural impact. The dark, flat roof, together with the façade forms a unified envelope and underscores the church building’s sculptural presence in the neighborhood.

Inside, the church interior has been reinterpreted in terms of both space and atmosphere. The sloping ceiling surfaces follow the geometry of the roof and draw the eye toward the altar area, which continues to serve as the liturgical center of the hall. Skylights and rows of side windows allow a calm, even light to flood the space, lending the church interior a bright, contemplative atmosphere.

The materials used are understated and carefully selected. Light-colored walls, acoustically treated ceilings, artificial stone floors and warm wooden elements create a clean, serene atmosphere. In addition to the church hall, the overall architectural concept also incorporates a multipurpose room, classrooms, administrative offices, a children’s area and circulation zones.

The renovation reinforces the existing church building’s spatial identity and gently brings it into the present. The interplay of clean lines, soft light and understated materials creates a place of reflection, community and connection.
